We have selected John Dawson's Lake District Walks as the world's very best website on the Lake District.

The John Dawson's Lake District Walks website is produced by John Dawson, a fell walker who lives in Kendal, Cumbria, England, in the heart of the Lake District.

The John Dawson's Lake District Walks website contains detailed descriptions of over 40 circular Lake District walks. There are over 300 Lake District photographs, mostly directly related to the walks. They include some spectacular panoramic photographs. Links to the relevant images are embedded in the descriptions of the walks. Some of the best Lake District images are offered as Screensavers.

There is a Photo Index, Highlights, Links & Jottings page, which contains highlights of the walks with star ratings for the quality and difficulty, a facility to contact the author, links to other Lake District web sites, and assorted jottings.

There is also an online Walk Distance Calculator which determines the straight-line distances between points and allows these to be added cumulatively to produce the total length of a walk. The program also provides the bearing for each leg, for use with GPS systems.
