Begun in 1093, to house the shrine of St.Cuthbert, Durham Cathedral is one of the masterpieces of Romanesque or Norman architecture. The Cathedral is built on a peninsula of land made by a loop in the River Wear, and the west end of the Cathedral towers over a steep gorge down to the river.
